Let's Rewind-Home Learning in January

Getting back to normal after Christmas and traveling, while weaving in birthdays, was a tricky endeavour. I was pretty exhausted the entire month. I managed to capture a few meaningful learning moments, on camera.

A Very Hungry Caterpillar literature unit was a great one, because Kaleb and Penny could really get involved with Gabby and I.  Although, It would probably be better to do it in the spring or summer time, when there are actually little caterpillars around. We did a lot of fun activities, including this little book, which made the Littles feel so big, as they could do it right alongside Gabby and Mom.

Kaia continued working on James and the Giant Peach. I love her vocabulary illustrations. She isn't crazy about looking up the words in the dictionary.  She succeeds in finding them about as often as she succeeds in finding her other shoe, or her favorite sketching pencil in her room, when it is right in front of her face. It is just not her strong point. The little doodles crack me up.

Penny has been great at plopping down on the floor and working on lacing with those large, wooden, colorful beads. (I was so excited when I scored a great pack of them in the dollar section at Target). The wig is essential.

This story about a hermit crab finding a new home was particulary fun for Gabby, as she longed for the simpler days, spent as a Kindergartener with her class pet, the hermit crab.(The one she drew a picture of that looked like a steaming pile of ____, and labeled "crap", to her teacher's amusment.) For her response to the story, I helped her draw the outline of the crab, then she proceeded to add detail and color it in with chalk pastels. She added the adjectives, used to describe the different homes, to her artwork.
